But when we ask why, the answer is often &#8220;our last supplier used it&#8221; or &#8220;it sounds premium&#8221;. The truth is more nuanced: PA\/PE is the right structure for some applications and an expensive overkill for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What PA\/PE actually is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PA (polyamide, commonly called nylon) and PE (polyethylene) are two different polymers laminated together with an adhesive layer. The result is a two-layer film where each material contributes a specific property:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PA \u2014 outer layer.<\/strong> Provides toughness, puncture resistance and a printable surface. PA is what stops your bag from tearing when the consumer grabs it off the shelf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PE \u2014 inner layer.<\/strong> Serves as the food-contact layer. PE offers heat-sealability, moisture barrier and grease resistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adhesive \u2014 middle layer.<\/strong> Binds the two films together. Typically 2\u20133 \u03bcm thick, applied by solvent-based or solvent-free lamination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When PA\/PE is the right choice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PA\/PE earns its cost in four scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sharply-shaped products.<\/strong> Nuts, frozen foods, dried snacks and hard candies have edges that puncture ordinary PE films. PA handles this without increasing total thickness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vacuum packaging.<\/strong> PA deforms well around the product during vacuum sealing, whereas PE alone wrinkles and traps air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Products that need toughness on the shelf.<\/strong> Coffee bags, pet treats and snack pouches experience physical handling that weakens single-layer films.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hot-fill or retort applications.<\/strong> With the right PA grade, PA\/PE survives temperatures up to 121\u00b0C during pasteurisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When PA\/PE is overkill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not default to PA\/PE when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The product is dry powder with no sharp edges \u2014 PET\/PE is cheaper and just as effective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need the highest oxygen barrier \u2014 aluminium foil (PET\/AL\/PE) outperforms PA\/PE for oxygen-sensitive products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your priority is recyclability \u2014 mono-material MDO-PE is the only structure that meets most EU recyclability targets today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your product is being sold as a flat sachet with no shelf handling \u2014 a simple three-side seal PET\/PE bag will do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typical thickness combinations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Application<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Typical structure<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Total thickness<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Dry snacks, candy<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">PA 15 \u03bcm \/ PE 60 \u03bcm<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">75 \u03bcm<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Coffee, pet treats<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">PA 15 \u03bcm \/ PE 80 \u03bcm<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">95 \u03bcm<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Frozen food, vacuum<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">PA 20 \u03bcm \/ PE 100 \u03bcm<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">120 \u03bcm<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Retort pouches<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">PA 25 \u03bcm \/ PE 120 \u03bcm<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">145 \u03bcm<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cost trade-off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PA is roughly 2\u20133\u00d7 more expensive than PE by weight. A typical PA\/PE pouch costs 15\u201325% more than an equivalent PET\/PE pouch. That&#8217;s worth it when toughness, puncture resistance or vacuum formability is essential \u2014 and not worth it when a simpler structure performs just as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are not sure which structure fits your product, send us your product type, filling method and required shelf life.
