PA/PE Laminated Film: When and Why to Use It

PA/PE is one of the most requested flexible packaging structures — and also one of the most misunderstood.

Buyers ask for it by name. But when we ask why, the answer is often "our last supplier used it" or "it sounds premium". The truth is more nuanced: PA/PE is the right structure for some applications and an expensive overkill for others.

What PA/PE actually is

PA (polyamide, commonly called nylon) and PE (polyethylene) are two different polymers laminated together with an adhesive layer. The result is a two-layer film where each material contributes a specific property:

  • PA — outer layer. Provides toughness, puncture resistance and a printable surface. PA is what stops your bag from tearing when the consumer grabs it off the shelf.
  • PE — inner layer. Serves as the food-contact layer. PE offers heat-sealability, moisture barrier and grease resistance.
  • Adhesive — middle layer. Binds the two films together. Typically 2–3 μm thick, applied by solvent-based or solvent-free lamination.

When PA/PE is the right choice

PA/PE earns its cost in four scenarios:

  • Sharply-shaped products. Nuts, frozen foods, dried snacks and hard candies have edges that puncture ordinary PE films. PA handles this without increasing total thickness.
  • Vacuum packaging. PA deforms well around the product during vacuum sealing, whereas PE alone wrinkles and traps air.
  • Products that need toughness on the shelf. Coffee bags, pet treats and snack pouches experience physical handling that weakens single-layer films.
  • Hot-fill or retort applications. With the right PA grade, PA/PE survives temperatures up to 121°C during pasteurisation.

When PA/PE is overkill

Do not default to PA/PE when:

  • The product is dry powder with no sharp edges — PET/PE is cheaper and just as effective.
  • You need the highest oxygen barrier — aluminium foil (PET/AL/PE) outperforms PA/PE for oxygen-sensitive products.
  • Your priority is recyclability — mono-material MDO-PE is the only structure that meets most EU recyclability targets today.
  • Your product is being sold as a flat sachet with no shelf handling — a simple three-side seal PET/PE bag will do.

Cost trade-off

PA is roughly 2–3× more expensive than PE by weight. A typical PA/PE pouch costs 15–25% more than an equivalent PET/PE pouch. That's worth it when toughness, puncture resistance or vacuum formability is essential — and not worth it when a simpler structure performs just as well.
